A Quick Guide to YouTube Privacy

While we don't share as much personal information on YouTube as on other social networks, if you're conscious of online privacy, you may want to take a look at your privacy settings. We've taken a quick look at how to protect your privacy on the video-sharing site with a few easy steps to ensure your account is set up in a way that satisfies your need for online confidentiality.

1. Privacy Settings

The first thing to take a look at as your privacy settings. Once you're logged into your YouTube account, click on your avatar at the top right of your screen and select "YouTube Settings." From the next screen, hit "Privacy" at the top left.

Here, you can set up and check your basic privacy options. Under the "Likes and Subscriptions" heading, you can check the box to ensure any videos you like and any channels you subscribe to, stay confidential.
Under "Search and Contacts" you can choose who can get in touch with you on the video-sharing site. Checking the first box means only your YouTube contacts can message you. The second box gives you the option of whether you want people to be able to find you by your email address.

2. Connected Accounts

Connecting other social accounts to YouTube is handy for quickly sharing content; however, unless you fully understand the settings, you may inadvertently share some of your actions on YouTube with your social circle.

To check your settings in this area, click on "Connected Accounts" (just above the "Privacy" option) in the Account Settings menu. If you have hooked up your Facebook and Twitter accounts to YouTube, you'll be able to see this here.

Below the connected accounts buttons you'll see your options under the heading "Share your public activity to connected accounts."
You have the ability to broadcast, via Facebook or Twitter, whenever you upload a video, comment on a video or like a YouTube clip as well as when you add a video to a public playlist.

Unchecking all these boxes means this activity will not be shared on Facebook or Twitter.

3. Channel Privacy

If you have a YouTube channel, while still on the "Connected Accounts" page, look to the bottom of your screen and click on the "feed settings on your channel" hyperlink.

Here you can set up and check your channel's activity feed. Checking the various boxes means activity will be posted to your feed when you add a video to a public playlist, like a video, subscribe to a channel or make a comment. Leaving them unchecked will not post this activity.

4. Check Your Channel

When your channel page loads, you should see the option to "View as Public" towards the top right of your screen, just above your channel art banner. Click this, and you'll see your channel how others view it.
