Microsoft Skype Now Links Android Wear With Smartphones

Skype has announced support for Android Wear, with the new Skype 6.4 Google Play app which allows Android Wear users to take advantage of the popular VoIP call service. The new additions, however, are limited to the instant messaging features. Among the more useful additions. users can now compose messages from their Android Wear smartwatch, similar to the Apple Watch. However, the update does not allow Android Wear users to place audio or video calls directly from the smartwatch app.
The new Skype update by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) facilitates Android Wear, while the app acts as a liaison between the smartphone and the smartwatch. Users cannot place or answer calls, but they have caller identification and can choose to accept or reject a call. The Android Wear app works with certain smartwatches such as the LG Watch Urbane and its luxury variant, the Moto 360, the Asus ZenWatch and Huawei’s new iOS-compatible Android Wear watch.

As Skype points out, users can see messages directly from the Android Wear device and even reply with the use of pre-written responses or the voice-to-text feature to dictate messages to the smartwatch. Users can respond with emojis, or draw on the smartwatch. Pre-written messages are usually not sufficient to respond to all chats, and are not personalized. So it is unlikely that this alone will be the feature that convinces Android Wear users to download the Skype app.
Users are allowed to accept calls using the Android Wear device, however they to pick up the smartphone to actually carry out a conversation. The wristwatch will allow users to pause and mute a call, or hang up. Microsoft released an updated version of Skype for iOS and Android, which provides better search, messaging and navigation features while it improves voice quality. Microsoft also introduced Mojis – short movie and TV show clips that users can send to others via Skype’s messaging service. Mojis has now been added to Skype’s Android app, as well.
The significant upgrade sees Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) devices benefit from the new Skype features, while the Android Wear support makes a case for the Android OS as a viable contender in the smartwatch space. Skype had already been updated for the Apple Watch, a move that gave Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) an edge in the smartwatch space. But it has to be argued that the Apple Watch is already miles ahead of its counterpart, as it races to the to the top of the smart wearables space.
That said, Skype is not likely to be the main factor for customers to buy a smartwatch. Although most of the new smartwatches run on Android Wear. Users of the Android-based smartwatches can rest assured that most of the apps that are available to Apple Watch users are available to them as well, and Skype is the latest to jump on that bandwagon. There is still dependency on smartphones, but at least Skype will now have a presence on all new smart wearables.
