Writing a blog can help establish your expertise, inform your customers, and drive traffic to your website. But before you start writing, you’ll have to choose a platform to fit your needs. Here is a list of platforms for blogging. There are full content management systems for large blogs, streamlined applications for easy blogging, and tools seeking to redefine “the blog.” Many of these platforms are open source and can be customized. Movable Type. Movable Type is a publishing solution for the creation and management of web content. Textpattern. Textpattern is a free open-source system to easily create, edit and publish content. Control all aspects of XHTML and CSS from the admin interface. Easily extend Textpattern with hundreds of available plugins. Textpattern has an active support community, and it’s available in over 40 languages. Price: Free.

Typepad. Typepad is an established blog platform that features analytics, a theme builder, and customizable themes. Typepad doesn’t have the flexibility of WordPress, but it provides a simple solution to get your blog up and running. Plus, marketing guru Seth Godin is on Typepad. Price: Plans start at $8.95 per month.

Blogger. Blogger is Google’s free platform for blogging. It requires only a Google account to get started. Choose from a variety of templates and easily customize. Add Google tools, like a +1 button, Google Translate, or even AdSense ads. Blogger does not have the features or customization as some other platforms, but it’s a good, simple platform to get started. Price: Free.

Scriptogr.am. Scriptogr.am is a tool for generating simple, elegant, static weblogs by reading Markdown files stored in your Dropbox folder. Publishing is as easy as hitting the “Synchronize” button in the Scriptogr.am dashboard. If you use a Scriptogr.am-partnered app, you can publish right from your writing environment. Posthaven. Posthaven is a long-term project that aims to create the world’s best blogging platform and stay that way. It’s a simple and modern blog platform that promises ease-of-use and a self-sustaining business model. Price: Posthaven is $5 per month, forever.
